The Lloyd McCorkle Training School in Montgomery once a juvenile detention facility, is now at the center of disturbing allegations of child abuse and sexual assault in NJ. A recent lawsuit filed by five men claims they endured horrific experiences during their time at the facility, which closed in the early 1990s.
On Monday, April 25, 2024, a lawsuit was filed in Somerset County Superior Court against the State of New Jersey by attorneys Moshe Maimon and Clark Binkley of Levy Konigsberg. The five plaintiffs, identified only by their initials, allege they were subjected to rape and sexual abuse while confined as juveniles at the facility.
The lawsuit paints a grim picture of the conditions at the Lloyd McCorkle Training School:
The lawsuit was filed under New Jersey's Child Sexual Abuse Act (CSAA), a 2019 law that expanded the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits in cases of child sexual abuse. This legislation has opened the door for survivors to seek justice, even years after the alleged incidents occurred.
The five men in this lawsuit are among 25 individuals represented by Levy Konigsberg who have filed similar claims against New Jersey's juvenile detention facilities in Jamesburg and Montgomery. This suggests a potentially systemic issue within the state's juvenile justice system during that era.
The State of New Jersey has 35 days to respond to the lawsuit. As this case progresses, it may shed light on past failures in the juvenile justice system and potentially lead to reforms to better protect vulnerable youth in state custody.
Laura McLaughlin, Esq., a prominent attorney specializing in child abuse cases, offers her perspective: "This lawsuit highlights the critical importance of accountability in our juvenile justice system. The allegations, if proven true, represent a catastrophic failure of the state's duty to protect and rehabilitate young offenders. The Child Sexual Abuse Act has provided a crucial avenue for survivors to seek justice and healing, even decades after the abuse occurred. Cases like this not only offer potential closure for the victims but also serve as a powerful deterrent against future abuses of power. We must continue to support survivors and work towards creating safer environments for all children in state care."
