SCHEDULE A CALLA former substitute teacher at Delran Middle School has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and child endangerment following allegations that he engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with a student. The case has shaken the Burlington County community and reignited conversations about student safety and school accountability in New Jersey.
According to investigators, the substitute teacher—whose identity has been made public through court records—allegedly began grooming the victim, a 13-year-old student, during the school year. The inappropriate relationship reportedly continued off campus, where the suspect engaged in sexual misconduct and exploitation.
Authorities stated that the incidents took place over several months, both on school property and in private settings, and were uncovered after the victim’s parents discovered disturbing communications between the teacher and their child.
The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspect faces serious criminal charges, including:
Aggravated sexual assault
Endangering the welfare of a child
Official misconduct
Detectives from the Delran Police Department worked closely with county investigators to gather digital evidence, including text messages, social media exchanges, and photographs that allegedly document the suspect’s inappropriate contact with the minor.
The accused has since been suspended from all teaching duties, and Delran Township School District officials have pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.
“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness,” a district spokesperson said in a statement. “Our top priority remains the safety and well-being of our students, and we are reviewing all hiring and monitoring procedures to ensure such an incident can never occur again.”
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and is currently awaiting trial in Burlington County Superior Court.
The arrest has left parents and community members horrified, particularly because it involves someone entrusted with the care and education of children. Experts emphasize that sexual abuse in schools often goes underreported due to the power imbalance between teachers and students, and the emotional manipulation that often accompanies grooming.
Child advocates note that the psychological trauma caused by educator sexual abuse can have long-term effects, including anxiety, depression, and difficulty trusting authority figures.
In cases involving minors, survivors and their families can pursue both criminal prosecution and civil action against those responsible—including schools, administrators, and institutions that may have failed to protect the child.
While criminal proceedings hold offenders accountable through imprisonment, civil lawsuits can provide victims with financial compensation and the chance to expose systemic negligence.
Civil suits against schools may allege:
Failure to properly vet or supervise employees
Ignoring warning signs of misconduct
Mishandling or covering up reports of abuse
These legal actions not only help families obtain justice but also drive policy changes within educational institutions, forcing them to implement stronger protective measures such as background checks, training programs, and mandatory reporting systems.
Under New Jersey law, survivors of child sexual abuse have significant legal protections and extended timeframes to pursue justice. The New Jersey Child Sexual Abuse Act allows survivors to file lawsuits against abusers and negligent institutions up to age 55, or within seven years of discovering the abuse, whichever is later.
This legal framework recognizes that many survivors are unable to come forward immediately due to fear, shame, or trauma, and provides them the time needed to heal before taking legal action.
