Former Trenton Teacher and Joyce Kilmer Basketball Coach Facing Sexual Abuse Allegations

NJ Teacher and Coach Facing Allegations of Sexual Abuse of Teen Student

A 52-year-old former Mercer County teacher and basketball coach has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a teen over a number of years, according to court records and prosecutors.

Darrell R. Moody, of Plainfield, entered the plea on Tuesday before Superior Court Judge Robert E. Lytle, admitting second-degree sexual assault.

Prosecutors said Moody was a fifth-grade teacher in Trenton Public Schools when he met the victim as a student. Investigators allege the abuse began in 2014, when the victim was 13, during a period when Moody was also coaching basketball at Joyce Kilmer Middle School.

The sexual abuse continued as the victim progressed into high school, prosecutors said.

In May 2024, the victim contacted Trenton police to report the years of sexual abuse. A subsequent investigation was launched through the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit.

Former Trenton Teacher Faces Prison

At sentencing on Sept. 4, under terms of a plea deal, prosecutors said the state will recommend a five-year sentence in state prison. After release, Moody is expected to be subject to parole supervision for life and required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.

Court terms also require Moody to surrender any teaching certifications and bar him from public employment.

Moody is also scheduled to be sentenced in a separate case. He was found guilty in Middlesex County of second-degree counts of endangering the welfare of a child and solicitation of a minor for prostitution.

Allegedly in 2023, Moody made contact with a young victim whom he did not know, asked questions about the victim’s age, and suggested they wanted to “make some cash.” Investigators further alleged he shared a lewd phone message created in a sketch app.

That sentencing is set for July.

Legal Options for Victims of Sexual Abuse by a Teacher or Coach

New Jersey sexual abuse lawyer Joe Messa discusses what legal pathways may be available to victims who were sexually abused by a coach, including how criminal cases and civil claims can work, what evidence can matter most, and how victims can seek support while protecting their well-being throughout the process.

Q: A coach facing allegations can leave victims feeling trapped and unsure what comes next. What legal options are typically available for someone sexually abused by a coach in New Jersey?

A: Victims may be able to report the conduct to law enforcement and pursue a criminal case, where the state brings charges. They can also explore civil routes, such as filing a lawsuit against responsible parties, depending on the facts and the timing of the abuse.

Q: In cases that span several years, what helps most when someone is considering reporting or litigation?

A: Consistent documentation matters—dates, locations, names of institutions, and any messages or records. Witnesses can also play a role. Even when memories have gaps, patterns of conduct and corroborating details can still be significant.

Q: Many victims worry about the process taking too long or feeling retraumatizing. How does a lawyer help manage that?

A: A good attorney coordinates the steps carefully to reduce unnecessary exposure. That can include preparing the victim for what to expect, focusing questions and requests, and using protective measures where available. The goal is to avoid turning the case into repeated reliving.

Q: What should victims know about cooperating with investigators, especially when abuse involves coaching or school settings?

A: They should tell the truth and share what they remember, but they don’t have to provide details beyond their comfort level. Counsel can help frame communications. Also, school and coaching environments often create additional records—policies, attendance logs, and possible reporting histories—that can support the case.

Q: If a defendant pleads guilty, does that change what victims can pursue?

A: It can. A plea can affect the posture of related civil claims and may provide some clarity on what the court accepted. However, civil cases still depend on broader facts—harm, responsibility, and damages—so victims should still speak with an attorney about next steps.

Q: What would you say to someone who believes they were abused by a coach but is afraid to act?

A: Get advice early from a lawyer who handles sexual abuse matters. Time limits can apply, and knowing the options before panic sets in is empowering. Victims deserve a plan—not guesswork.
