In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the medical community, Dr. Cornelius Gallagher, a pulmonologist from Wall Township, Monmouth County, has voluntarily surrendered his medical license following his indictment on multiple child sexual abuse charges in NJ. The allegations involve the sexual abuse of a minor over a decade-long period, beginning in 2004 when the victim was under the age of 13.
Dr. Gallagher, previously affiliated with three hospitals in Monmouth County, was arrested in July 2023 after an investigation by Wall Township Police revealed the alleged abuse. In July 2024, he was indicted on two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, two counts of second-degree sexual assault, and one count of third-degree child endangerment related to possession of child pornography. Authorities have clarified that these charges are not connected to his medical practice or any patient interactions.
In response to the indictment, the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners secured a voluntary surrender of Dr. Gallagher's medical license through an Interim Consent Order filed on September 9, 2024. Under the terms of the order, Dr. Gallagher agreed to cease all patient care, avoid entering his medical practice during business hours, and refrain from managing or influencing any medical practice in the state.
Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The sexual exploitation of a child, as is alleged here, is one of the most heinous crimes that can be committed. When a physician is facing these types of charges, the action taken by the Board is not only appropriate but necessary."
Cari Fais, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs, added, "The alleged conduct of this doctor, if proven, would demonstrate a callous victimization of a vulnerable child that violates the most basic standards to which we hold medical professionals."
