On June 16, 2025, the New Jersey Supreme Court delivered a powerful victory for child sexual abuse survivors by ruling that the Attorney General’s Office may proceed with a grand jury investigation into the Catholic Church’s handling of clergy sexual abuse allegations.
The decision marks a critical turning point in a yearslong legal battle, opening the door for a more transparent examination of how New Jersey’s Catholic dioceses responded to allegations of abuse and cover-ups over the years.
New Jersey’s journey toward holding clergy accountable began nearly seven years ago and has been marked by numerous legal battles. Here’s how the state reached this monumental point:
August 14, 2018: Pennsylvania releases a grand jury report detailing decades of clergy sexual abuse and cover-ups.
September 6, 2018: Then-Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announces a statewide clergy abuse task force, modeled after Pennsylvania’s. The hotline established receives over 550 reports.
February 11, 2019: New Jersey’s five Catholic dioceses create a victim compensation fund. Survivors accepting payments must agree not to pursue legal action.
December 1, 2019: The Child Victims Act takes effect, suspending the statute of limitations on civil lawsuits involving childhood sexual abuse.
October 1, 2020: The Diocese of Camden files for bankruptcy, citing liabilities tied to survivor settlements and financial losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
May 3, 2021: Camden files a motion to stop the state’s grand jury investigation, challenging the legality of using a grand jury in this context.
May 25, 2023: A Superior Court judge sides with Camden, blocking the investigation and sealing the decision from the public.
February 5, 2025: After a court lifts the seal, media outlets expose Camden’s legal efforts to halt the investigation.
April 28, 2025: Oral arguments are heard by the New Jersey Supreme Court in the final legal battle over the grand jury’s legitimacy.
May 7, 2025: In a surprising move, Camden’s new bishop, John A. Williams, publicly withdraws the diocese’s objection, signaling cooperation.
June 16, 2025: The state’s highest court rules in favor of the Attorney General, allowing the grand jury investigation to proceed.
The Supreme Court’s decision sends a clear message: institutions cannot shield themselves from scrutiny when it comes to child sexual abuse. The investigation promises to shed light on systemic misconduct and help uncover long-suppressed truths.
For survivors, it represents a significant moment of validation and renewed hope for justice.
