A New Jersey family has filed a lawsuit against the gaming platform Roblox and messaging app Discord, alleging that their lack of safety measures enabled a predator to sexually exploit their 13-year-old son. The NJ child sexual abuse lawsuit claims that the companies failed to prevent known risks, allowing the predator to groom, manipulate, and abuse the child online.
According to the legal complaint, the child was lured through Roblox, a widely popular online gaming platform, where he was coerced into communicating with an adult predator, identified as Sebastian Romero. The predator allegedly used Discord, a messaging app popular with gamers, to further manipulate and exploit the child, convincing him to send explicit images in exchange for in-game currency. Romero has since been charged with child sexual exploitation and production of child sexual abuse material.
The lawsuit raises serious concerns about how major digital platforms protect young users from online predators. Roblox and Discord claim to have child safety measures, but critics argue that these protections are insufficient and that the companies fail to effectively monitor predatory behavior.
Roblox has over 200 million users, including millions of children, making it a prime target for online predators. Similarly, Discord's private messaging and group chat features make it easy for offenders to communicate with minors outside of parental supervision. The family’s lawsuit argues that both companies knew or should have known about the risks, yet failed to take adequate preventative measures.
Online sexual exploitation is a growing threat, but victims and their families have legal options. Lawsuits like this one seek not only justice for the survivor but also accountability from corporations that fail to protect children. Holding these platforms legally responsible can force change in how online safety is enforced and help prevent future cases of abuse.
